ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:
“This picture means a lot to me because it shows my strength, my power and my courage. I was diagnosed with Chiari malformation, in which the cerebellum of the brain stem leaks into the skull, creating pressure. I had to get that removed. During that time, I found out we were homeless. After I had surgery, I still have trouble with swallowing, keeping steady balance, critical thinking and movement. I'm in pain constantly, but it actually became more of a strength than it has become an obstacle. I'm just thankful that I'm able to be alive today. Because a lot of people don't really get a chance to be able to move as free as I am; they're confined to beds. I'm in school for criminal justice and have a minor in substance abuse counseling. I have one son, he's amazing. He does fine in school. I have a bright future, I'm going to work hard and continue doing what I need to do.”
