ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:

“This picture brings me joy because it's the beginning of my light. It's the very beginning of memories. It's the beginning of my family. It's when we were young, much younger than now. And so it brings me joy, because I see the beginning of my children and their families. And I know what happens next. I know the grandchildren that come and then the great grandchild that I have now. And the memories, and how much the memories are so important, and also the history. It's important to me, and I really included the history, because they need to know where they're from, too. And they need to understand their Appalachian roots. And they need to understand how grateful I am and well how powerful that is and has been in our lives. So I had the kids in 4H. They raised lambs in the backyard in Price Hill; we had big gardens in Price Hill. The police did come and tell us we couldn't raise the lambs, but they found out we could. I just have really tried to incorporate all that into the their lives. I'm the oldest of nine. And so I've gotten a chance to be part of my nieces and nephews lives because I babysat everybody, so I got to have fun with everybody's kids.”
